Rough cast stone walls and an open ceiling perpetuate a resounding, harrowing chill. The cool air circles the space in a way that is both haunting and calming, as though mimicking the monastic Gregorian chant. This slight discomfort grounds me, and I am wholly present and aware in this place of worship. Despite the hard surfaces and external temperature, warm light shines softly throughout the chapel. An entire spectrum of color adorns the walls and ceiling, drawing the eye upward. Through the manipulation of light one is made aware of the structure’s divine purpose.
As I step off the sunlit patio across the threshold of the large wooden doors, I am greeted by a warm, collected, caffeinated ambiance. The gentle buzz of clattering dishes and coffee fueled gatherings creates a relaxed yet consistent hustle. This contradiction evokes feelings of Friday afternoon on a Monday morning. A subtle, roasted aroma wafts in between soft gusts of cool fresh air. This delicate airflow follows the continuous movement of visitors. The placement of people supports collaboration and facilitates commemoration in an environment driven by copious amounts of natural light. Focused work meets relaxation where warm wood and sleek metal finishes come together.
